“I knew Matt from when he invested in a business I was working in. And he made a real impact there – I enjoyed working with him. I took the leap with a new business idea and asked Matt to be part of my founding team. He helped us find a new name, re-brand, launch and grow. He understand the pressures of running a small business and is unafraid to speak his mind. When I need his advice, he is there.”

FAQs

Q: What is a Marketing Director?

A: Marketing Directors (also known as Directors of Marketing) are responsible for implementing an organisation’s marketing, communications, and brand strategies. Typical outputs would be annual marketing plans, a calendar of campaigns and events, a marketing budget, competitor analysis and results reporting.

Q: What is a CMO

A: With its origins in the late 2000s, the role of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) grew in the 2010s, as organisations were challenged to think strategically about how to utilise their customer data and optimise their customer communicational channels, many of which were digital. Most CMOs now occupy the C-suite and report to the CEO. Their role is to creatively apply insights to business challenges, use data to validate decisions, create seamless customer experiences across media and revenue channels, and ensure that the customer remains at the centre of the organisation.

Q: What is a Fractional CMO / Marketing Director?

A: A Fractional CMO or Marketing Director will typically join the company for the short term, usually working for a “fraction” of the work week. Their hours can ramp up or scale down depending on client needs.

Q: What’s the difference between a Marketing Director and a CMO?

A: Both are important roles. However, there are differences in terms of their responsibility and scope of authority. CMOs operate at the executive level and take responsibility for developing and implementing the organisation’s marketing strategy. They work closely with their C-suite colleagues to align the organisation’s marketing efforts with their business objectives and growth plans. Marketing Directors enjoy a more tactical role, taking responsibility for specific areas of the marketing department and reporting to someone who is on the executive team and whose strategic plans include marketing. That could be someone also responsible for sales, revenue, or operations.

Q: How long is your typical assignment?

A: There is no typical assignment length. Briefs are often based around a specific mission, and many internal and external factors can influence the speed of these.

Q: What are Matt’s key skills?

A: Matt is an experienced marketer who has worked at board level, for small, mid, and large sized businesses. Most assignments draw on the kind of skills you’d expect a Fractional CMO to utilise, leadership, lead generation, retention and engagement, marketing communications, brand identity, brand positioning, research, and analytics. His passions are brand marketing and digital communication. And he loves a spreadsheet!

Q: How much does a Fractional CMO cost?

A: The actual day rate depends on several factors which we will discuss with you. But our aim is always to be much cheaper than a full time marketing manager. We charge on a timesheet basis, in 15-minute blocks, based on a pre-agreed daily rate. Our daily rate is on a sliding scale based on the brief and the number of days booked at the start of the assignment. The only cost we apply is the fractional rate. There are no additional fees.

Q: Who works for Matrix Marketing?

A: Matt Ansell is the only full-time employee of Matrix Marketing. Matt hires specialist support as required for each assignment, with some associates such as Michelle <Insert link to Michelle’s biog> and Paul <insert link to Paul’s biog> working with Matt on multiple assignments.
